The Problem with Furniture Adhesive

In an industry where tradition flows abundantly, where “hand-made” and “quality craftsmanship” are more than a source of pride, but a way of life, changes in manufacturing methods are extremely rare. Up until recently adhesive technology in the U.S. furniture market has been rather stagnant. Most manufacturers had to choose between using contact adhesives containing harmful chemicals, or the other alternative being large, cumbersome spray systems often used with subpar adhesives plagued by weak tack and high cost. This was the best case scenario for years--until now.

Better Adhesive = Better Results

In early 2015, Chemique Adhesives introduced a new line of ProAqua adhesivesspecifically formulated for the Office Seating, Upholstery, and Soft Furnishings Markets. This new waterborne adhesive system is shaking up furniture market like no adhesive before. Furniture manufacturers, and craftsmen alike, now have an eco-friendly alternative that’s safe, delivers a very high tack, and is ideal for bonding foam and fabric to difficult substrates including wood and plastic. The ProAqua line of water based adhesive is offered in single or two-component formulas that can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed. This allows manufacturers to shape its use around their entire manufacturing process. Other benefits of this system include an instant bond that is repositionable, coat weight control, various working times, a solvent-free formula, high solids base, high heat resistance, and best of all—no fabric bleed through. It’s easy to see why the new adhesive system is gaining traction with furniture manufacturers.

You (and Your Customers) Want to Be Green

For forward thinking manufacturers looking to create eco-friendly sustainable furniture, waterborne adhesives are the ideal bonding solution. The recently introduced ProAqua adhesive line cures without off-gassing harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) typically found with furniture adhesives. Rather, the water base is evaporated or absorbed into the substrate, leaving a solid bond in its place. The only downside to using a solvent-free adhesive in furniture you miss out on that new car smell coming from your couch!
